Thunderbolts
Cast Assembly
01 / The Brief & Context
Going into Phase 4, the MCU was laying groundwork for the Thunderbolts—a team of reformed supervillains. The task was to visualize what this dark, moody ensemble would actually look like onscreen.
Created on May 17, 2021, before any official announcements were finalized, I pulled together characters who had already made MCU or Marvel TV debuts (Zemo, Punisher, U.S. Agent, Red Hulk, Ghost Rider, Taskmaster, and Ghost). The challenge was unifying drastically different costume styles and lighting scenarios from different movies into one cohesive, brooding team shot.
02 / Strategic Approach
Unlike the Avengers, the Thunderbolts operate in the shadows. I bypassed typical Marvel "bright blue sky" marketing and instead grounded the team in a monochromatic, slate-grey environment heavily desaturated of color, save for strategic pops of red and fiery orange (from Red Hulk and Ghost Rider).
By framing Zemo dead-center, I established the narrative hierarchy instantly. The composition forces the viewer to recognize them not as heroes, but as a tactical, dangerous strike force.
03 / The Output
04 / Massive Industry PR
The execution was so tightly aligned with fan expectations that the artwork (May 17, 2021) went hyper-viral across Reddit, capturing the attention of major entertainment media.
ScreenRant, one of the world's largest entertainment news outlets, published a dedicated feature article titled: "Thunderbolts MCU Cast Imagined In Dark & Moody Fan Art", exclusively showcasing this key art as the definitive visual for what the future of the MCU should look like. This level of earned media proves my ability to not only design art, but to architect viral cultural moments.
